Web safe fonts are those which can be safely used for site text because most visitors will have the font installed, regardless of operating system.
If you use a non-standard font for your website text, a visitor's browser without that font will select an alternative - which may have undesirable results in terms of design aesthetics.
To ensure your website design looks the same for all visitors, it is recommended that you only use web-safe fonts for your primary website text. Fonts used as part of images (logos, image page headings, etc) do not have this restriction, as the font you want would be embedded within the image itself - which any visitor can display.
